Inspired by the love of travel, living abroad and seven years residency in Southern Africa, Sharon and Gordon Hull created a gallery featuring some of South Africa's finest furniture, art, crafts and wine. This gallery is called The Boudashery.
Gordon spent years in the U.S. Government foreign service. Sharon worked many years for "Uncle Sam", and discovered the foreign service division in 1982. Shortly thereafter the two found each other. September of 1985 brought them marriage and an exciting assignment that took them to the southern region of the huge "dark" continent, Africa. The experience was like no other despite the fact that Gordon had previously lived in northern Africa. The desire to share the creative and colorful culture of southern Africa came during the second assignment to transitional South Africa from 1993 to 1997. The Hulls discovered distinctive hardwood furniture of the highest quality. Hand-crafted from sustainable indigenous woods unique to the continent, the furniture captivated them and they made numerous personal purchases. No wonder they were offered the opportunity to market the beautifully hand-crafted pieces in the States. Realizing that they wanted to share even more than the unique furniture, Sharon and Gordon decided to also offer the best of the region's arts and crafts. Many patrons are curious about the origin of the name “Boudashery”. Two words, boutique and haberdashery, were combined in the search for an upscale representation of Africa, the items featured, and the gallery itself. Webster defines boutique as a small shop specializing in gifts, fashionable clothes and accessories. Haberdashery, Victorian in origin, is defined as a dealer in small wares and furnishings. The Boudashery supports businesses, co-ops and individual artists in sub- Saharan countries committed to accountable government and economic reform. Many of its suppliers support wildlife and environmental preservation and protection through donations to organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund for Nature.
To this day the Hulls will tell you that Southern Africa is a wonderful place to live and a very difficult place to leave.
